The idea behind KAIA
Kaia is inspired by the idea of expressing love and care through physical closeness — like a warm hug.
Its circular silhouette reflects the cocooning nature of a hug, gently wrapping around the body to create a sense of comfort and safety. The chair’s petite frame specifically highlights rattan, a fast-growing material that allows for optimal usage with next to zero waste. The frame’s continuous lines make Kaia’s contemporary look integrate seamlessly into a wide range of interior scheme and usage. Designed to envelop, cradle, and support, Kaia invites you to slow down and sink in — just as you would in your loved ones’ arms. Through the design, Kaia aims to offer not just physical comfort, but emotional familiarity.

Our Identity
Who we are
Tangan Living celebrates rattan for its timeless versatility—once a cornerstone of Indonesia’s traditional lifestyle, now reimagined into intricate forms that speak to the elegance of modern living. Through thoughtful design, empowered partnerships with local artisans, and a conscious path toward sustainability, we are transforming rattan.
From hand to home.
About rattan and why we choose it
Rattan is one of nature’s most sustainable materials. While hardwood trees can take 20 to 80 years to mature, rattan is a fast-growing climbing vine that can be harvested in just 2–3 years. Because it grows around existing trees and does not require land clearing, rattan helps preserve forest canopies and supports biodiversity by maintaining natural habitats. It also regenerates naturally after cutting and does not require replanting.
Indonesia supplies around 80% of the world’s natural rattan (ITTO, 2019), particularly from the tropical forests of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, where the climate and conditions are ideal for cultivating premium varieties like Manau rattan — known for its strength and flexibility. In addition to its quality, Indonesian rattan stands out for the depth of local expertise, with traditional weaving and bending techniques passed down for generations in rural communities (UNESCO, 2010).
Every rattan chair from TANGAN Living goes through a thoughtful sourcing process. As we grow our brand, we aim to scale into a more sustainable and ethical production model that supports both the environment and local economies.
Who designs KAIA Chair?
KAIA is designed by Studio Hendro Hadinata.
Studio Hendro Hadinata (SHH) is a Jakarta-based creative practice founded in 2016. SHH's work has been exhibited at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Emerge in Singapore, and IFFT in Tokyo. We chose SHH specifically for their aligning value, which is to see local cultures as a rich source of design inspiration, and believe that shaping a better future comes from creating meaningful objects that strengthen our connection to our shared identity.
